Charles Jobard worked for many years in the shadow of his well known brother, Francois, but he has successfully built a fine domaine with excellent holdings. Today, the estate owns and works eight hectares of vines spread throughout Monthelie and Meursault. In addition, a small negociant business was started in 2003 to supplement the estate’s production. All the wines are made from purchased grapes or must that are treated exactly as the estate wines. Charles’ son Remi is now in charge of the operation, and he is regarded by many as a rising star. The wines made by Remi are clean, pure and modern in the best sense. The yields are kept low and strict selection ensures that only the best grapes make it into the cellar. New oak is used, but only in moderation. The resulting wines show depth and complexity.
The domaine owns well situated vines in some of the top parcels in Meursault. An elegant, refined village wine is made from very old vines in the lieu-dit Les Chevaliers, near the heart of the village. The premier cru Les Poruzots-Dessous adjoins Genevrieres-Dessus and Remi produces a lush, opulent wine from this site. More mineral, but just as powerful, is the wine made from Genevrieres, regarded as one of the top vineyards in Meursault. Concentrated and spicy, this cuvee is of grand cru caliber. Les Charmes is a large vineyard that runs all the way down to the Meursault-Puligny road, but Remi’s plot is located at the top of the site that borders Les Perrieres-Dessous. While the wines near the road can be rather average, those produced from the upper portion are some of the best in the appellation. Jobard’s bottling is full of peachy, honeyed fruit and is subtly nutty.
There also some wonderful red wines bottled by the domaine from Meursault’s neighbor to the north, Monthelie. Les Vignes Rondes, one of the better premier cru sites in the village, produces a medium bodied, fragrant wine that offers fine value. Vines are also located in Sur la Velle and Les Champs-Fulliot, both of which touch the Volnay premier cru Clos des Chenes. Though not as complex as those from Volnay, the wines from these vineyards are very attractive, showing red currant and strawberry fruit. These cuvees illustrate Remi’s skill at making both white and red wines. Ambitious and talented, Remi Jobard is a winemaker with a bright future.
